9 Essential Fall Home Maintenance Tasks

Don't let Fall end before you have prepared your home for Winter! The combination of neglecting to inspect the exterior of your house and Winter weather is likely to damage your roof and siding. So, follow this checklist to avoid mishaps.

Avoid These Awful Consequences

Fall and Winter weather can do a number on your house:

  • Clogged gutters

  • Ice dams

  • Roof rot

  • Sagging roof

  • Broken shingles

  • Higher utility bills

  • Pest invasions

  • Holes in the roof and insulation

  • Damaged flashing

  • Broken shingles, which could lead to an entire roof replacement

  • Moisture and mold within the walls

Your Fall Checklist

You will be clear as long as you complete these nine tasks.

  1. Clean your gutters. Fallen leaves will build up in your gutters. When snow and ice harden, it can lead to clogging, ice dams, and rot on your fascia and roof beams.

  2. Install gutter guards. Gutter guards keep debris and leaves out and allow your gutters to stay clean longer.

  3. Clean the debris from your roof. When Winter rolls around, any junk on your roof will add to the weight of the ice, which could injure your roof.

  4. Trim your trees. Speaking of debris, trimming trees will reduce the amount that falls on your roof. You should pay special attention to the branches that are dangerously close to your roof. No branches should be touching your roof.

  5. Inspect or request a roof inspection. Warping, curling, and broken shingles aren't able to protect your roof and insulation the way that they are supposed to. It's an excellent way to ensure that your roof will be in good condition for Winter.

  6. Check your insulation. Find out if your insulation is covering the vents in the eaves. Uncover the vents to prevent ice dams from forming on the roof. Clear any plants and debris from the ridge and eave vents, as well.

  7. Remove pests. Exterminate the pests in your attic to prevent holes in your roof.

  8. Inspect your flashing around your chimney and ventilation pipes. Flashing is vital for keeping water out, so ensure it's intact.

  9. Inspect or request a siding inspection. Cracks in your siding allow for moisture to get behind them and expand and contract with freezing temperatures.

Taking care of your home is worth the time because it'll save you money in repairs in the long run. Your roof and siding are especially vulnerable in the Fall and Winter.
